Peter Mulvey: singer/songwriter 9/14

St Clair Productions Unitarian Fellowship Tuesday, Sept 14, 7:30 pm
Over the past 20 years, Mulvey has pursued a restless, eclectic path as a writer and musician – immersing himself in Tin Pan Alley jazz, modern acoustic, poetry, narrative, and Americana styling. Relentlessly touring as a headliner, his attitude is, "When you love what you do, you can work all the time," he has also shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Ani diFranco, Indigo Girls, and Greg Brown, and has attracted an audience that stretches from Anchorage to Amsterdam.

Britt Festival - Orchestra/Frautschi

Britt Festival - Orchestra with violinist Jennifer Frautschi, Aug 20, 8 PM
Smetana, The Moldau (from "My Fatherland")
Bartok, Violin Concerto No. 2
Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 2 in c minor, Op. 17 "Little Russian"
Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Jennifer Frautschi is an adventurous performer with a wide-ranging repertoire. Selected by Carnegie Hall for its Distinctive Debuts series, she made her New York recital debut in 2004. Frautschi was born in Pasadena, California, and studied at Harvard, the New England Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School.
As an active soloist and chamber performer, Frautschi compared performing to another fast-moving activity in an interview with the New Haven Register in 2005. She said, "The thing about performing is that you need incredibly quick reflexes, like a race car driver. Unless you are playing by yourself," she points out, "things just keep getting thrown at you…so you need to have lightning-quick reflexes to deal with things, to negotiate the turns. This is part of what makes it so incredibly exciting, and why it can get some people freaked out."
Frautschi has earned praise for her performances and recordings alike. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer wrote, “She is the real thing.” She will perform Bartok’s Violin Concerto No. 2 at Britt.

Britt Festival - Orchestra/Ax

Britt Festival - Orchestra and Pianist Emanuel Ax Aug 14, 8PM
Wagner, Das Rheinhold: Entry of the Gods Into Valhalla
Sibelius, Symphony No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 82
Brahms, Piano Concerto No. 1 in d minor, Op. 15
One of the most beloved pianists performing today, Emanuel Ax has played with countless orchestras and won superlative accolades since he first captured public attention in 1974 when he won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition. A native of Lvov, Poland, Ax moved to Canada with his family when he was a child.
In addition to performing the standard masterworks, Ax has turned his attention in recent years toward the music of 20th-century composers, including John Adams, Bright Sheng and Christopher Rouse. He is also devoted to chamber music, and has worked regularly with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Peter Serkin and Jaime Laredo. Recent projects included a tour of Asia with the New York Philharmonic and a tour of Europe with both the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Pittsburgh Symphony. He will perform Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 at Britt.

Ax has recently become a champion of loosening up the etiquette regarding applause at orchestra concerts. He says on his blog, “I really hope we can go back to the feeling that applause should be an emotional response to the music, rather than a regulated social duty.

Camelot Theatre "I Hate Hamlet" Aug 11 - Sept 12
A young hotshot television actor, his career in limbo, is offered the opportunity to play Hamlet onstage and relocates to New York where he rents a marvelous gothic apartment, inhabited by John Barrymore's ghost, who arrives intoxicated and in full costume in the apartment that once was his. The contrast between the towering, dissipated Barrymore and Andrew Rally, hot young TV star, leads to a wildly funny duel over women, art, success, duty, television, and yes, the apartment.
